GM and NASA Team Up To Build Robots

February 4, 2010 at 2:06 pm

NASA and General Motors are working together to accelerate development of the next generation of robots and related technologies for use in the automotive and aerospace industries. The newest version of the robot, pictured above, is called Robonaut 2, or simply R2.

The point of this collaboration is safer vehicles in the future. By using these robots in plants, there will be greater quality control. There will also be advances in vehicle safety systems, as advances in robot technology will improve things such as sensors and vision technology in cars.

Alan Taub, GM’s vice president for global research and development put it best by saying, “The partnership’s vision is to explore advanced robots working together in harmony with people, building better, higher quality vehicles in a safer, more competitive manufacturing environment.”

Who knows how long before the robots really start affecting better quality in cars, but for now take a look below for more pictures.
